About this Artwork
It is difficult to make any general statement about the masking tradition in Africa. There are many regional variations and individual tribes have developed masks in styles that are characteristic of their particular culture and representative of local myths and rituals. However, the masking tradition in Africa is one of the oldest as evidenced by the Tassili rock paintings in the Sahara, which are judged to have been executed more than 4,000 years ago.
Traditionally in Africa masks have been associated primarily with ritualistic ceremonies rather than displays for entertainment or fun although there are of course exceptions. For example, in Central Africa masks are widely used in circumcision rites and initiation ceremonies but they do also have a mythical and story-telling role.
Masks in Africa are made from a variety of materials including grasses, leaves, wood, feathers and cloth. The African inspired tin mask (shown opposite) is not a direct copy of any traditional mask but is representative of the style of mask most emblematic of African culture.

Bob Campbell, also known as Stig, as is much a metal sculptor as he is an industrial artist or furniture designer. Using scrap metal parts from cogs and wheels to chains and treads, he crafts recycled one-of pieces and furniture sets that use a creative combination of manufactured pieces and built-from-scratch shapes.
He incorporates leather, wood and other industrial materials as needed but metal is always at the core of his work. He has sold his unique metal furniture pieces to all kinds of people through various venues, ranging from high-end luxury retail stores to music festivals, street markets and his own personal private gallery.

But..everyone is Chicago calls it “The Bean”.
These are some photos I took from under Cloud Gate.
::
The Cloud Gate is British artist Anish Kapoor’s first public outdoor work installed in the United States. The 110-ton elliptical sculpture is forged of a seamless series of highly polished stainless steel plates, which reflect the city’s famous skyline and the clouds above. A 12-foot-high arch provides a “gate” to the concave chamber beneath the sculpture, inviting visitors to touch its mirror-like surface and see their image reflected back from a variety of perspectives. ::
What I wanted to do in Millennium Park is make something that would engage the Chicago skyline so that one will see the clouds kind of floating in, with those very tall buildings reflected in the work. And then, since it is in the form of a gate, the participant, the viewer, will be able to enter into this very deep chamber that does, in a way, the same thing to one’s reflection as the exterior of the piece is doing to the reflection of the city around. -Anish KapoorBut..everyone is Chicago calls it “The Bean”.
